Joey Logano topped the Enjoy Illinois 300 practice lap charts with a last-minute qualifying simulation on new tires to lead a Penske clean sweep of the top three lap speeds in Friday’s practice session, followed by Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric.

Last week’s rollover passenger, Chris Buescher, will not be competing in the Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series race, due to Covid protocols. He is currently scheduled to return in the No. 17 Ford. Zane Smith is making his Cup Series debut in the car at World Wide Technologies Raceway.

In the Cup practice session, Ben Rhodes, driving the No. 16 Chevy for AJ Allmendinger, while ‘Dinger races the Xfinity Series at Portland International Raceway, slid into the wall to bring out a brief red flag. Later in the session, Parker Kligerman parked the No 14 Ford with smoke boiling out of the car. Track safety crew extinguished the flames and Kligerman said he had smelled the smoke but wasn’t sure at first whether it was his car or not. “Yeah, it was us,” he laughed.

Several of the Cup drivers were heard to be shifting up and down two gears during the session and a few times, it sounded as if some were downshifting into second gear.

Ryan Blaney’s top lap of 33.025 sec / 136.260 mph led a three-car Penske Racing sweep of the top positions, Daytona 500 winning rookie Austin Cindric ran second, just .038 second back, with Joey Logano pipping Blaney with sticker tires on the last lap of the session, apparently making a mock qualifying run to move ahead of Blaney by 0.119 sec, as the only car under 33 seconds in the session.

Qualifying for Sunday’s race will take place on Saturday.

Following the Cup Series practice, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series took to the track for their practice session.

Qualifying for the Toyota 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race resulted in rookie Corey Heim qualifying 0.060 sec ahead of Zane Smith. Stewart Friesen lapped only .027 sec behind Zane Smith with another Smith, Chandler, .022 second slower than Friesen and Christian Eckes only a thousandth off of Chandler’s time. The top 24 cars are all within 0.985 second and Dean Thompson, qualified 25th, just 1.002 second off the pole.

NASCAR’s Xfinity Series is racing on the west coast this weekend at Portland International Raceway’s road course where the first practice session ran under rainy skies. Sheldon Creed headed the session, turning a lap on rain tires of 1:28.678 at 79.975 mph. Ty Gibbs was second fastest, almost a half second slower, with Myatt Snider, AJ Allmendinger and Brett Moffitt capping the top five.

Qualifying took place under light mist growing to spotty rain in the second group. Connor Mosack slid off the track and picked up a big clump of grass clippings on his grille, pitted and then ran second-fastest in Group B’s session. Greed, Mosack, Allgaier, Allmendinger and Josh Berry were scored in the top five positions as the final minute started for the session, then Ty Gibbs pushed the No. 54 Toyota into the top position to relegate AJ Allmendinger to the ‘bubble’ as last car to advance to the final session of ten.

AJ Allmendinger led the Kaulig cars onto the track for the second session, then NASCAR stopped the session and declared the session too wet to continue and will set the grid according to the two previous sessions, giving Anthony Alfredo the pole for Saturday’s road course race.
