Friesen Dominates Texas Trucks

(FORT WORTH, TX – MAY 20, 2022 – RIS) Stewart Friesen dominated the SpeedyCash.com 220 at Texas Motor Speedway, leading 60 of rhe 149 laps run and beating out Christian Eckes by 0.122 second for his third career series victory.

Despite starting last after an unapproved adjustments penalty before the green flag, John Hunter Nemechek advanced more than halfway through the field in less than eight laps.

Chris Hacker had his second spin of the day, looping on lap nine in almost a replay of his earlier spin. After the restart, Nemechek advanced to 11th by the 20th lap of the 147 scheduled laps, then into tenth, around Ben Rhodes, just a lap later, followed by an easy pass on Corey Heim.

Ryan Preece, Stewart Friesen and Nemechek headed the field at the end of the second stage, giving Preece the sweep of the first two stages. Bristol dirt winner Ben Rhodes came in fourth, with Christian Eckes fifth. With traffic getting tight on pit road during the pit stops, Corey Heim got spun on pit road.

Friesen started inside of Nemechek at the restart, with Nemechek easing out to a lead before Preece lost ground with a block on Eckes.

Ty Majeski got a little loose inside of Derek Kraus, sending Kraus into the wall and causing only the second incident yellow. Preece’s team elected to pit to tape up some loose bodywork and Nemechek pitted for fuel, seemingly too early to finish the race without another stop. He pitted after another lap and crew chief Eric Phillips said the truck is only three laps short of making the finish with the fuel on board.

Kris Wright cut his right front tire in contact with Tyler Hill, then slammed into the wall.

Zane Smith got into Chandler Smith, cutting his right front but not causing a caution, then Tyler Ankrum spun in the second turn to bring out another caution leaving about fifteen laps to run after the caution ends.

A spin by eleventh-running Ben Rhodes with six laps left set up an overtime finish. The spin started when Tanner Gray got into the wall slightly, bouncing into Rhodes’ truck and sending the No. 99 into a spin.

Friesen and Eckes led at the restart with Friesen passing for the lead and heading Eckes by nearly an eighth of a second at the checkered flag for his third win in the series. This was the first win for the new Halmar/Friesen team.

Friesen credited Ryan Preece with the push that shoved him into the lead. Eckes led the second most laps in the race on his way to a second-place finish. John Hunter Nemechek, after winning the pole and sent to the back of the field for race’s start, finished in sixth place.
