Daytona 24 _ The Roar Report 1

Roarin’ at Daytona

The “Roar before the 24” Sports Car racing weekend ends….a veritable smorgasbord of road racing in early January. Despite the chilly temperatures, this reporter has enjoyed every minute.

Three days of preparation for the January 27th Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona has allowed the international race teams to evaluate their cars, drivers and formulate the tactics required to be able to reach the finish line after the round the clock challenge coming three weeks from now,

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) racers are basically identical to the World Endurance sports cars that compete in the legendary Le Mans 24 hour Race.

The weekend proved to be a delightful appetizer for the upcoming 24 Hour Race featuring many famous international racing personalities including former Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso and three time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves.

Sunday afternoon featured qualifying to determine the “preliminary” pole position that sets the team pit and garage location. That was captured by Brazilian Filipe Nasr in the Whelen Engineering Racing Cadillac at a new track record of 134 mph. Wow! That was very, very fast.

Being a former Lakewood resident, now living in sunny Florida, I can’t wait for the 27th and the excitement of the first world class motor racing event of 2018. Oh my!
