Brad Keselowski Wins Kentucky with Just Enough Fuel

Christopher Hanewinckel, USA Today Sports

SPARTA, KY – RIS – Brad Keselowski crossed the finish line on fumes to win the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway.  He saved just enough fuel at the end to get his No.2 Team Penske Ford  to Victory Lane at the 1.5-mile track near Cincinnati, Ohio.  His car, completely out of gas after crossing the finish line, had to be pushed to victory lane by his crew.

"I ran out coming off Turn 4,” said Keselowski.  “I got nothing in the tank,” he told his crew heading into the fourth turn.  Keselowski was aplogetic to the fans for his lack of a burnout.

"Gosh, that was great!  These repaves are usually my Achilles' Heel. This stretch is the best we have, Keselowski said.  "We've got to keep it going until the fall.  I feel terrible for the fans that I couldn't do a burnout, the car didn't have no gas."

Carl Edwards finished second, coming from more than eight seconds behind over the final few laps to pressure Keselowski for the lead on the final lap, but fell short.

The classes of the field were the cars of Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex, Jr., but as the race ran on with 20 laps to go, Keselowski was at the front of the field.  Keselowski, along with others were afraid of running out of fuel.  Harvick came in to get fuel with 15 laps to go, and lost track position.

Truex came through the field after a penalty for illegally passing Harvick entering pit road on an earlier pit stop, but with no clean air, his charge to the front slowed.  Truex also made a pit stop with 10 to go for tires and fuel, and went from third to finish 10th.

With seven laps to go, Keselowski slowed and gave the lead to Matt Kenseth, who then pitted, giving Keselowski the lead.  Edwards moved into second.   He could never catch the fast Ford of Keselowski.  Kenseth finished 8th, and Edwards had to be content with the runner-up position.

There were a lot of wrecks.  Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. was the first to wreck out, wrecking on Lap 11.  Jimmie Johnson was next, spinning out and hitting the outside wall on Lap 33.  Joey Logano was next and hit the wall on Lap 53.

Chase Elliott and Ryan Blaney, both vying for the Rookie of the Year title, got together in a three-wide duel with Greg Biffle.  Blaney was in the middle of the three-wide battle, got loose and slammed into Elliott.

It was the fourth win for Keselowski, the leader in that category in 2016
