Kyle Busch Wins Ford 400 and is Crowned 2015 Sprint Cup Champion

Mark Rebilas/USA Today Sports

HOMESTEAD, FL - RIS - Kyle Busch passed leader Brad Keselowski on the final restart with seven laps to go and went on to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford 400 and the 2015 driver's championship for 2015.  It is Busch's first Sprint Cup championship in his ninth season despite missing the first 11 races of the season due to an injury in an Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway in February.

Kevin Harvick finished second in his try for a second consecutive championship.  Keselowski finished third, Joey Logano fourth, and Kyle Larson fifth.

The Ford 400 was a competitive race from the start.  Denny Hamlin took the green flag from the pole, but Logano passed him on the first lap and maintained the lead for the first 19 laps.  At Lap 14, flames under Hamlin’s No.11 Toyota and fluid from the failure brought out the first caution at Lap 15. Busch got by Logano and led the next 16 lapse giving away to Jeff Gordon, running his last Sprint Cup race, took over for nine laps.  Harvick then took over for the next 46 laps ending with a multi-car wreck started by Clint Bowyer.  Bowyer got his Toyota sideways and result was huge damage to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Casey Mears, Ty Dillon, Aric Almirola, and his No. 15 Toyota.  Earnhardt finished 40th, Almirola 41st, Mears 43rd and Dillon rallied back to 23rd.  Bowyer finished 43rd.

After the caution, Kyle Larson took over for two laps before giving away to Logano for the next 46 laps.  With the lead swapped between Carl Edwards, Logano, and Busch for the next 16 laps, Busch finally took over the next 14 laps after a debris caution at Lap 151.

When the green flag flew again, it was Busch leading the next 14 laps until another caution for fluid on the track once again slowed the field.  Martin Truex, Jr. changed only two tires to get him the lead at Lap 169 for three laps before being passed by Brad Keselowski at Lap 175.  Keselowski led the next 43 laps in his Team Penske Ford before giving away to Busch at Lap 215.

After the caution, busch led the next two laps until Keselowski passed him and led the next 41 laps, when the caution came out at Lap 257for debris with 16 laps remaining.  After starting on the inside when the green flag came out, Keselowski was able to hold on for two laps before Busch passed him and set sail for the victory and the championship over the last seven laps.

"I just can't believe it, with everything that happened this year, all the turmoil, everything I went through, my wife went through," Busch said. "I said back then, I'll say it again, the rehab and then getting back and getting focused was the hardest part, the hardest thing I've ever gone through.  To put it all together here tonight, this night wasn't all that hard."

Gordon’s last ride wasn’t what he wanted.  He led briefly for those nine laps, but he had trouble with restarts early and the car was never comfortable to him.

Gordon led nine laps early in the race and was third for an early restart, but he bobbled and plummeted to eighth. That was about as good as he'd be the rest of the race, as he struggled mightily with the handling of his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

"Gosh, I'm a little disappointed, I'll be honest," Gordon said. "I thought going into the race we had something for them."

Kevin Harvick set a record by having 12 second place finishes in a season, and that’s where he ended up—second place.

"You always want to win, but I've learned not to be greedy," Harvick said after that 12th second-place finish of the year cost him the championship.

Martin Truex, Jr., the final contestant of the four eligible for the championship, was never really competitive.  After trying that two-tire stop, he found himself out of the top 10 all night.  He finished 12th.

"We really felt like without trying something really different, we weren't going to get there," Truex said. "We felt like we had to take a really big swing at it."

His title is the first for Toyota, which joined the Sprint Cup Series in 2007 and had shots at championships but came up empty again and again. It was also fitting because Joe Gibbs Racing dominated a huge portion of this season and was the overwhelming favorite to win the title with one of its four drivers.

Busch joins his older brother, Kurt, as a NASCAR champion. Kurt Busch won the title in 2004, the inaugural season of NASCAR's Chase format. The system has been tweaked several times and is in the second year of an elimination format that sends four drivers to Homestead to race for the title. The first driver to the finish line hoists the Cup, and Busch won it by winning the race, just as Harvick did a year ago.

The title is the fourth NASCAR crown for Joe Gibbs, a three-time Super Bowl winning coach, but his first Cup title since 2005.
