Harvick Dominates Phoenix Flag to Flag
(PHOENIX, AZ – MAR 15, 2015 – RIS) Kevin Harvick became the 2015 season's first repeat winner in a dominating performance, leading 225 of the 312 laps and finishing 1.154 second ahead of Jamie McMurray's second place finishing Chevy. The top five finishers were all Chevys, with Ryan Newman third, Kasey Kahne fourth and Kurt Busch fifth in his first race back after a NASCAR suspension.with Brad Keselowski bringing his Ford home in sixth. Harvick's win was his fourth consecutive victory at Phoenix.

"The restarts were just really slippery and I learned that in the race yesterday," said Harvick. "You had to really maintain your entrance speed and really slide the thing through the center of the corner to try to help keep it pointed up off. But I just want to thank the fans. This is a really special place of all these West Coast race for us to win. I want to thank everybody who helps us on this car and everybody at SHR for uh, man. These things are incredible and really fun to drive.

"I think when you look at the start of this year, we know each other so much better. We have a lot of things different than what we had last year and we had that experience of everything that we did to race for the championship. So, I just feel like the bond between this team is really special. Rodney Childers (crew chief) and myself and the engineers and everybody get along so good. It's almost scary how well things are going. You don't want to talk about it too much because you want it to keep going. But I'm just really proud of these guys on this team and everything that they do."

Brian Vickers brought out the first caution after hitting the wall, apparently with Jimmie Johnson having rammed him, on the first lap. "I have no idea. I would love to see the replay," said Vickers in the garage. "It's a shame because this Aaron's Dream Machine Camry was really good in practice and I felt really good about the first lap. Last I heard I was coming out of (turn) four and I heard I was all clear and I was against the wall and then I just got drilled from behind and turned into the wall. It seems kind of early to be using the bumper, but I need to see a replay.

"I don't know [if he got hit.] I came out of turn four and my spotter said, 'All clear.' I went up to the wall and all of the sudden I got hit from behind. I don't know what happened. I don't know if Jimmie (Johnson) was outside and if he was then I was told I was all clear and if he wasn't outside or if he was outside by an inch then it seems kind of early to wreck someone on lap one. I don't know whose fault it was, I just know I got hit from behind and I was against the wall and my spotter said, 'All clear.' That's pretty much all the information I've got."

Just a few laps after the green flew again, Alex Kennedy spun in the fourth turn to cause a second yellow flag. On the start, pole sitter Kevin Harvick opted for the outside line and Joey Logano, Saturday's winner, leaped into the lead.

The right rear tire blew on the No. 9 Ford, sending Sam Hornish into a spin for the fourth caution of the race on lap 116, following a brief debris caution for a piece of metal on the track in Turn One fifty laps earlier. Dale Earnhardt Jr got clocked too fast entering the pits, sending him to the back of the lead lap pack and Brad Keselowski's crew mounted only two tires on his Ford, earning him the lead as the pack took the green flag.

After a 45-lap period trailing Keselowski, Harvick retook the lead. Dale Earnhardt Jr's blown right rear tire on lap 182 caused the fifth caution and gave TV viewers a wild ride on the in-car camera. He explained that the loose car just wore out the right rear tire, causing the spin and impact. The crew immediately started trying to repair the car's rear bodywork and subframe. As a track wrecker hauled the car back to the garage, the tire's remnants around the brakes were still flaring up in flames.

"The car was really, really loose today and just wore the right rear tire out, and blew the tire," reported Earnhardt. "We'll try to get it fixed up and get back out there.

"They never tell you they are going to blow out (laughs), never.  You don't ever have a warning.  It will be alright."

Logano led for nine laps before Kevin Harvick retook the lead just before a piece of debris on the front straight brought out another caution. AJ Allmendinger pitted out of fifteenth place, the highest-placed car to take advantage of the opportunity.

Harvick took on two tires and re-entered the track still ahead of Kurt Busch under a debris caution at lap 226. Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson made contact as Edwards left his pit, sending Johnson back to the pits for minor repairs.

Harvick selected the outside line and moved into a lead of almost four tenths of a second in the first lap. Tony Stewart spun and backed into the wall as he pushed wide and tried to avoid hitting Justin Allgaier's car. Paul Menard somehow managed to avoid impacting Stewart's car in the smoke.

Harvick and Kurt Busch led at the restart, with Jeff Gordon moving into third place, with 30 laps left, the trio was trailed by Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and Carl Edwards in the top ten positions, with Edwards just over 12.28 seconds behind the leader.

Tony Stewart and Sam Hornish got together when Stewart's right front tire blew and he bounced off the front straight wall into Hornish's car. The lap 288 caution ran a little longer than anticipated so the track's crew could clean up for the final 18 laps of the race. The top nine cars on the restart stayed out and restarted on used tires, with Harvick leading McMurray, Kahne and Newman but David Ragan's slip into Danica Patrick, causing her to spin in Turn Four on the first green flag lap brought out the caution yet again, setting up a restart with twelve laps left in the scheduled distance.

McMurray used the inside line to come close to taking the lead but Harvick swept around to keep the lead. Martin Truex tried to go three wide to get around Kurt Busch and Kyle Larson for sixth, but lost momentum as the top three moved out ahead of the field. On the final lap, Joey Logano charged around Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Kyle Larson for an eighth place finish.

"That is not quite where we wanted to be there at the end," said Logano. "Todd made a gutsy call there at the end to put four on it and we were back to 16th there with 12 to go and really at that point he was leaving it up to me to be aggressive and we were able to pass a lot of cars to get up to 8th.

"Getting a top-10 is great but we want to win some more. We just didn't quite have the speed. We had speed in the beginning of the race and made some adjustments and got better and then the track changed and we couldn't keep up with it. We couldn't fix the car no matter what we tried we were going the wrong way. We still have some setup issues we have to try to work out with the Shell Pennzoil Ford and we will be back at it soon. We have speed in qualifying and started up front and ran up front but when we lost our track position it was really hard to get back up there."

Brad Keselowski said after the race that he "had that one run where we got out to the lead and led like 50 laps which was second to Harvick, that is something here. We just didn't quite have enough speed.

"I thought we were about a third of fourth place car and got shuffled to finish where we did. It was a great effort. We have to keep working to find more speed. There are a lot of Chevies up there and we need to get our Fords running a tiny bit better. We didn't really have the speed we needed to run with the 4 and 41. Everybody was on a different strategy it seemed and it didn't quite pan out for us to get the third or fourth we deserved but we ran really well. We just have to find some more speed. That is the common theme to keep up with the 4 car and even the 41 this week."
